The poster of Bangla Zee5's Taarkata has already stirred curiosity, largely because it hints at a story that doesn't quite sit within neat genre boundaries. There's something undeniably intriguing about a poster that refuses to behave. Now, the first look of Taarkata offers a striking glimpse into a world where tension simmers beneath the surface and nothing is quite what it seems. Each character appears layered and enigmatic, suggesting a story driven as much by psychological intrigue as by unfolding events.
Directed by Samik Roy Choudhury, Taarkata promises a wacky, action-heavy narrative laced with dark humour. At its centre is Agni Sen, played by Vikram Chatterjee, an ex-cop who returns to his hometown under circumstances that are anything but straightforward. A traumatic incident becomes the trigger, but the real story seems to lie buried in Agni's own past, something unresolved, possibly dangerous and clearly not done with him yet. What adds another layer of interest is the fact that this marks Vikram Chatterjee's first production venture under his banner VC Films.
Vikram, often described as something of a chameleon on screen, appears to lean fully into that reputation here. Agni Sen is presented in two sharply contrasting avatars. In one, he is the composed police officer, carrying the quiet authority of someone who once believed in order and structure. In the other, he transforms into something far less contained with dishevelled hair, a rough beard, and a gaze that suggests a mind teetering on the edge.
"As an actor, portraying Agni Sen has been both challenging and deeply exciting. The character exists in two completely distinct avatars — before and after — each shaped by vastly different circumstances. In his earlier phase, Agni is headstrong, sharp, and driven by a clear sense of purpose. However, as the story unfolds, he transforms into someone far more untamed, carrying the weight of everything he has endured. Mentally and emotionally, he is in a very different space, almost like a fractured version of his former self. In many ways, it felt like playing two entirely different personalities within the same character. I hope I’ve managed to bring authenticity to both versions and have done justice to the character's journey," said Vikram.
Then there's Meiyang Chang, stepping into Bengali content for the first time, and doing so as the antagonist. His character, Dodo, appears to embody a more unsettling kind of villainy. On the surface, he ticks all the expected boxes: the black suit, the polished demeanour, the controlled presence. But the description hints at something deeper. Dodo presents himself as progressive and philanthropic, a man who seems entirely comfortable in modernity. Yet beneath that composed exterior lies a streak of extreme sadism. It’s a fascinating contradiction, made sharper by Chang's inherently affable screen presence. "Portraying Dodo has been an incredibly enriching experience. The character is layered and complex, demanding a nuanced approach to storytelling. Collaborating with Samik, along with co-actors like Vikram, Satyam and Priyanka, has truly elevated the journey. Taarkata draws you into the world of a man entangled in multiple mysteries, promising a gripping, edge-of-the-seat watch for audiences," said Chang.
Priyanka Sarkar, as Chhanda, offers a different kind of stillness. Her first look suggests a character who is composed, empathetic, and emotionally guarded. It's a subtler note amid the chaos, and perhaps an essential one.
The ensemble is rounded out by actors like Joydeep Mukherjee, Satyam Bhattacharya, Sushmita Roy and Ayush Das, each adding their own intrigue to the unfolding narrative.
"Taarkata promises to bring an elaborate cast and an interesting mix. We are looking at a world which is familiar yet unknown to the Bengali audience. With Taarkata the biggest USP would be the collaborations that we are exploring in this series. I am sure it's going to be a fun watch," said Rusa Banerjee, business head, Bangla Zee5.
