Among the many options available in metallic fashion jewellery, brass is taking centre stage with its striking finish and statement-making appeal. Its versatility itself allows it to complement both Western and Indian ethnic ensembles, and with the jewellers getting creative and drawing inspiration from edgy concepts for their designs, it now appeals to a wide range of stylistas.

For our Saptami-special lookbook, we adorned actress Paoli Dam in brass ornaments, showcasing unique pieces from Sukanta Arthouse that carry meaningful symbols tied to Durga Puja. Stylist Anupam Chatterjee dressed Paoli in stunning maroon outfits, while make-up artist Abhijit Paul highlighted her look with shades of metallic gold and bronze.

A PEEK INTO PAOLI’S CASKET AND JEWELLERY PREFERENCES

I used to be into jewellery, but now I prefer to keep things simple. Puja is all about traditional attire, yet I enjoy modern jewellery too — it really depends on what complements my outfit. I adore gemstones, pearls, and gold, but my choice always aligns with what I’m wearing. My mom gifted me a sitahaar long ago, and I cherish it deeply. I gravitate towards statement pieces — whether it’s a ring, a necklace, or earrings. I like them to be subtle yet striking, ensuring that whatever I wear stands out.

Paoli exudes elegance in a maroon sari that beautifully complements her look in metallic shades. A mathapatti featuring dainty rose motifs and layered neckpieces that includes a striking choker with a lion crest, a necklace themed on teardrops merging, and a pendant depicting Durga, accessorise her look. Her hands are adorned with a chic cylindrical cuff and a playful spring cuff, both designed with matching rose motifs, along with finger rings featuring lotus, soldier, and stone motifs. A foot piece inspired by the gentle curves of rose petals adds a finishing touch to the look. Shimmery hues of gold on her chest and hands and copper hue enhancing her eyes and lip complement the hair worn in open curls.

PAOLI’S SAPTAMI

Saptami feels like the most joyful day of Puja for me. It all kicks off on Sashthi, and by Ashtami evening, there’s a sense of melancholy that the festivities are coming to an end. But Saptami is all about fun, where the festive spirit truly sets in.

PUJA AND PREM

Isn’t there a song called Preme pora baron? (laughs) But I remember one incident from my childhood. There was this tradition where the elders used to take us on a pandal-hopping trip from central to south Calcutta. We’d dress our best, and the elders would keep us safe, creating a little barricade around us. Once, someone handed me a chit, but my mesho got it instead. I often wonder what it said — perhaps a phone number! But I don’t think love happens only during Puja; it can strike at any time.
