Take-Two Interactive Software has delayed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI to next year. The developer requires more time to finish what’s expected to be one of the most profitable video games ever. The title has already missed multiple deadlines.
The previous game in the series, GTA 5, is the second-best-selling video game of all time.
There is a lot at stake for Take-Two since the franchise makes up a sizable portion of the company’s overall revenue. Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 210 million units, making it the highest-selling game after Microsoft’s Minecraft. Since its release, the franchise has generated about $9 billion in revenue, according to an earlier estimate by TweakTown, a trade publication.
Rockstar is known for its perfectionist approach and Straus Zelnick, CEO of parent company Take-Two Interactive, previously said each new game from the developer “needs to be something you’ve never seen before”.
The company has previously delayed other major releases, such as 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2.
