Disco is in the news, but in a way you wouldn't have imagined. When Spotify celebrated its 20th birthday with a disco-ball icon, it didn't realise that other brands would lean in. The music streaming service introduced a temporary glowing green mirrorball icon for its mobile app for Apple's iOS. There was user backlash, but that hasn't stopped Google from joining the trend.
The 'Disco' icon pack on Google Pixel phones offers each icon an overhaul that gives a disco ball effect on a black background. Announcing the arrival on X, Android ecosystem president Sameer Samat said: "Your wish is our command. Disco icons available on Pixel as of today… Are y'all sure you still want this?"
His post included a screenshot of a Pixel phone fully decked out with sparkly, disco-ball-inspired icons. The new icons are available through Pixel's custom icons feature, which allows users to choose from different AI-generated styles for their app icons. Samat also jokingly posted: "Should we make this icon pack happen on Android?" alongside a Chrome icon turned into a disco ball.
To use the disco icon pack, you'll need a Pixel running Android 16 QPR3. It added a new "Create" option for icon packs, offering five styles of AI-generated icons — including designs such as Scribbles, Cookies, and Easel. QPR3 was rolled out to every Pixel model going back to the Pixel 6 series, so unless you have a Pixel 5 or older, your Pixel is supported.
Users have complained about Spotify's disco ball icon, citing "huge readability & brand issues" because it uses a different shade of green that is "too dark against the black".
