Google adds virtual try-on in India to help shoppers see outfits on themselves

Earlier in the year, Google announced a new AI feature that allows users to virtually try on clothes. The feature is now available in India and works by enabling users to upload a photo of themselves.

The virtual try-on tool aims to reduce the uncertainty of how a garment would look on a person using just a single uploaded photo.

The tool works across a wide range of garments, including tops, dresses, jackets, trousers and even shoes. It relies on an AI model trained to interpret both the contours of the human body and the behaviour of different fabrics — from how they crease to how they stretch or flow. The result is a far more realistic sense of fit and appearance, rather than relying solely on model photos or size charts.

Shoppers can find the “try it on” option on many apparel listings across Google. Beyond helping people visualise a potential purchase, the feature encourages experimentation with styles and the ability to share looks with friends, essentially turning the screen into a portable fitting room.

A step-by-step guide involves:

1. Browse your style: When you’re shopping for shirts, trousers, dresses or shoes on Google, simply tap the “try it on” icon on product listings.

2. Strike a pose: Upload a full-length photo of yourself. For best results, ensure it’s a full-body shot with good lighting and fitted clothing. Within moments, you can see how the garment will look on you.

3. Show it off: Tried it on? Save or share your look with friends — or tap to shop similar styles at your fingertips.

When the feature was originally announced, a Google spokesperson told US tech publication CNET: “Your uploaded photo is never used beyond trying things on virtually, nor is your photo used for training purposes. It is not shared with other Google products, services or third parties, and you can delete or replace it at any time.”
