Instagram has introduced a helpful update to its carousel format, allowing users to add a unique caption for each slide instead of relying on one caption for the whole post.
The carousel feature enables users to share up to 20 photos or videos in a single post, making it one of the app's most popular ways to engage. Previously, the caption at the bottom of the post remained the same, regardless of which slide was viewed. Users wanting different text per slide had to edit it onto the image directly or fit explanations for every photo into a single caption.
Starting today, when creating a new carousel post, users will see an option in the final step before posting. They can choose between one caption or multiple captions. If they select the latter, they can swipe through each slide and write a custom caption for each one. As followers scroll through the carousel, each caption will appear below its respective slide.
This update is a straightforward yet significant change. For brands and creators, it transforms a carousel into something similar to a micro-blog, perfect for step-by-step tutorials, product showcases with specific details, or any post where context needs to vary with each slide. Instead of a single caption awkwardly trying to summarize 20 different images, each can now stand alone.
There's also a real accessibility advantage. Users who depend on screen readers and other assistive technologies will enjoy the same narrative flow as sighted users, without relying solely on alternative text to keep up.
Meta, which owns Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, tested the feature on select accounts over the past month and had strong engagement before its wider rollout. This change follows another recent update that finally allows users to rearrange their profile grids, something many had been asking for.
