Starring Koel Mallick as the fearless woman investigator, the upcoming film Mitin — Ekti Khunir Sandhaney is expected to be an exciting whodunit and detective thriller that will provide audiences with an edge-of-the-seat experience. A song from its soundtrack that was dropped recently by the makers has heightened interest in the film for its vibrant energy and dramatic, powerful visuals.
Titled Mayar khelare, the song composed by Jeet Gannguli, is a lively and sparkling duet sung by Shilpa Rao and Rupam Islam. Performed in their inimitable styles, the singers inject life into the lyrics by Prosen to deliver a musical experience that celebrates a refreshing new performance aesthetic while underscoring its profound meaning. Rao’s soulful singing style and ghazal-like vocal texture add a spiritual depth to the song while Islam’s raw and passionate voice rooted in rock emphasises the emotive content of the lyrics, telling a story far beyond its narrative.
The visuals of Mayar khelare operate on two levels — the first, of a music performance being watched by a couple played by Roshni Bhattacharjee and Shaheb Chattopadhyay and the second, that of Koel as Mitin, pursuing a killer in daring solo chase and encounter sequences. Though a party number, the lyrics of Mayar khelare have a philosophical overtone that has obvious significance when interpreted in connection with the film’s story of illicit relationship and crime. It is evident that Shaheb’s character is probably of a married man in an extramarital relationship with Roshni’s character. Shaheb’s reaction to the song, and especially to the female singer of the duo performing it, strikes a jarring note. What is more surprising is that his partner notices it as well, but strangely pretends to overlook his misdemeanour. The song, which begins with a warm, cosy and relaxed vibe that matches the ambience of the party scene, suddenly gives way to an undercurrent of tension that changes the whole mood of the song, though the party and the performance continue to be as rollicking as it was earlier.
Mayar khelare gets a new dose of energy and dynamism as the visuals shift to Koel’s Mitin. At first showing Mitin deep in contemplation while trying to crack the murder mystery, the song derives greater power and intensity as we see her chasing criminals on a motorbike, trailing behind them on foot and finally knocking her target down with a punch that impresses with its suddenness, speed and flourish. Mitin’s look of intense determination and her cool, calculated moves serve as a reminder that the murderers will surely pay the price for their act of crime, as suggested by the lyrics of the song. Based on a story written by Suchitra Bhattacharya, Mitin — Ekti Khunir Sandhaney is directed by Arindam Sil.
