Calcutta, Sept. 15: A 23-year-old dental student was found dead in her Barrackpore flat this morning, hours after a classmate came to meet her.
Pinky Shaw, a final-year student at Haldia Dental College, had arrived at the flat around 11 last night from her hostel in Haldia. There was no one else at home: her parents live in Cooch Behar.
Police have arrested the classmate, Satrajit Roy, and started a murder case.
“The young man told me that Pinky had hanged herself,” said Asim Das, a neighbour. The police did not find any rope or piece of cloth in the room where she was found dead.
“There were superficial marks of strangulation on Pinky’s neck,” said Kalyan Mukherjee, the deputy commissioner of the police’s detective department (Barrackpore commissionerate).
The security guard of the building said Satrajit came around 5am. The student informed Das about Pinky’s death around 11am. The police said the guard let Satrajit in as he used to call on Pinky whenever she came to the flat. Her father B.P. Shaw, a retired schoolteacher, had bought the flat two years ago.
