Aug. 23: Police today arrested the father of Aradeep Chatterjee who is behind bars on the charge of practising as a cancer specialist without an allopathic medical degree.

Officers of the Bidhannagar commissionerate's detective department picked up Ashim Chatterjee, 75, from south Calcutta in the afternoon.

Chatterjee, who claims to hold a degree in homoeopathy like his son, used to treat patients at the Critical Cancer Management Research Centre and Clinic in Lake Town.

The clinic operates out of a building on SK Deb Road where the Chatterjees live, the police said.

His son used to treat patients there, an officer of the commissionerate said.

Cops had found prescriptions with names of both from the clinic. While Chatterjee senior had a homoeopathy degree beside his name, his son had MD in "Integrative Oncology", the officer said.

"They used to treat patients together and the prescriptions had both their signatures. We have seized several such prescriptions," Santosh Pandey, deputy commissioner, headquarters, Bidhannagar commissionerate, said.

An officer said the police had sent multiple notices to Chatterjee senior asking him to meet them. "He ignored our notices repeatedly, claiming he was either sick or out of town."

He has been charged under various IPC sections, including 419 (cheating by impersonation), 420 (cheating), 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy).

The charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail and/or fine.

He will be produced in Salt Lake court tomorrow.
