Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath is scheduled to address a rally in North Dinajpur on February 3, the local BJP leadership announced on Friday.

The rally is being touted as a “show of strength” by the BJP before the Lok Sabha polls, after the party mobilised 1.5 lakh people for Amit Shah’s rally in Malda earlier this week.

“On February 3, Yogi Adityanath will speak at a public meeting that will be held in or around Raiganj. We have received confirmation from central leaders and want to prove our support base at the meeting. Our colleagues have chosen three prospective venues and informed the district administration,” said Shankar Chakraborty, the North Dinajpur BJP chief.

The BJP, insiders said, is focussing on a number of Lok Sabha seats in north Bengal, which include the two in Malda and the Raiganj constituency.

An erstwhile bastion of the Congress, the Raiganj seat has in the past elected Priya Ranjan Das Munshi and his wife Dipa. “The support base of the Congress has withered in the past six-seven years. A considerable section of Congress supporters has joined the BJP,” said a North Dinajpur leader of the BJP.
