Patna: A 30-year-old married woman is running from pillar to post to get justice for her and her five-year-old daughter, who were physically tortured and allegedly driven out of the house by her Non-Resident Indian (NRI) husband.

The woman lodged a complaint with the woman police station in Patna on February 12, seeking the arrest of her husband Vishal Kumar and his other family members. Vishal is at present posted in Kuwait and his relatives live at Rajendra Nagar in Patna. Earlier, Vishal was posted in Chennai.

The woman told the police that she was married to Vishal, a resident of Rajendra Nagar road number 12 in Patna, at Dhanbad in Jharkhand in 2012 and gave birth to a girl child in 2013. The in-laws started harassing her for dowry a couple of months after her marriage. Once, she was even forced to undergo abortion against her wishes. She had to return to her parents' house from Kuwait several times between 2015 and 2017, she claimed. The last time she visited Kuwait in December, she alleged she was brutally assaulted and driven out from home by her husband. She returned to India with the intervention of the Indian embassy in Kuwait and was subsequently admitted to a Delhi hospital for treatment.

The ill-treatment meted out to her could be gauged from the fact that her five-year-old daughter was not spared and assaulted time and again, she said. Last week, she came to Patna and lodged a formal complaint with the woman police station near Gandhi Maidan, seeking action against her in-laws. She has also sought the intervention of senior police officials for early arrest of the accused.

The investigating officer in the case, Dhani Prasad, said the police conducted a raid at the Rajendra Nagar house of the accused but they were absconding. "The house is locked from outside," Prasad said, adding that efforts were on to nab the accused.

The woman, who is staying in a guest house in Patna's Raja Bazar locality, said she and her minor daughter apprehended a threat to her life as the accused were influential people. "So far police officials are cooperating with me," she said.

Vishal and his relatives were not available for comment.
