New Delhi: The training camp ahead of the Asian Games, for the Indian football team, might be held in Turkey, an official of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) said on Monday. The Asian Games will be held in Incheon, South Korea, from September 19 to October 4.

“Though no final decision has been taken yet, we have received a proposal from our chief coach Wim Koevermans in this regard,” the official said. “We will decide on the venue shortly,” he added.

The Dutch coach, it is believed, has told the federation that a camp in Turkey would not only offer the team better training facilities, but also provide the opportunities to play practice matches. “Lots of Asian teams could be practising in Turkey before the Asian Games. Practice matches could be arranged against those teams. The coach feels it could be of great help before the Asian Games,” the official said.

As per Fifa rules, only under-23 players are eligible to play in the Asian Games. Each team, however, are allowed to include three senior players in the squad. Koevermans, despite his rather dismal record with the senior national team, will coach the Indian teams for the Asian Games and the Asian under-22 championship. The Dutch coach has also been given an extension till October.
