Will not get a Bird here, says Sourav

Calcutta: Sourav Ganguly stood behind umpires who officiate in first and second division league matches of the CAB and its other tournaments. Agreeing that the umpires do make mistakes in the local matches as it's not possible to "get a Dickie Bird" here, the CAB president also clarified that the errors are not at all intentional.

Umpiring in CAB matches has all of a sudden become an issue especially after WB Police SC complained against BCCI-level umpire Satrajit Lahiri for giving "poor" leg-before decisions in their innings defeat against Tapan Memorial.

WB Police had also alleged that Lahiri was filming a Tapan Memorial pacer's bowling, that too in umpiring uniform, after the match.

"Yes, our umpires do make mistakes. But by no means are those mistakes done on purpose. Besides, you won't get a Dickie Bird here," Sourav told reporters on Saturday.

"We'll certainly be taking necessary steps to make sure things get better," he added.

The CAB will be holding a meeting involving members of the umpires committee, tournament committee and match observers' committee on Monday wherein the matter will be discussed. Lahiri has also been summoned.

It was learnt that Lahiri may be barred from officiating for a certain of period or given a letter of warning. The association, however, is definitely not happy with him.

"We'll decide only on Monday's meeting. But what Lahiri did (filming a pacer's bowling post match) is unacceptable," an umpires committee member said.
