Calcutta: Geeta Phogat has already grabbed headlines having taken part in the Olympics as India’s first woman grappler.
Her performance might have fallen short of expectations last year in London, but Geeta is determined to clinch a medal in the next edition of the quadrennial event in Rio de Janeiro.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 58th Senior National Wrestling Championship, here, at the Khudiram Anushilan Kendra, on Friday, the 24-year-old said: “Winning an Olympic medal is my dream and I want to live it. For me, it’s an Olympic medal that counts more than anything else.
“Although I had no success in London, I want to make full use of whatever experience I have gained from last year’s Olympics, which was my first. I’m sure that experience will help me fare better in 2016.”
Geeta’s immediate focus is the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games, both of which will be held next year. She will be competing in the 59 and 55kg sections at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, respectively.
“At present, my weight is 62kg. So I need to make the necessary adjustments to participate in the respective events.
“We have the national camp starting from the end of this month in Lucknow, where I will look to work further on my game,” Geeta said.
