New Delhi: Vijender Singh is aiming to become the first Indian to grab the No. 1 spot in the professional boxing circuit. "Seven years ago, I was the first Indian to win an Olympic medal in boxing, in Beijing. It was a big achievement. My target now is to become first Indian champion among professionals," Vijender said, on Tuesday.

"Lot of people are saying that making money remains my primary aim. I feel sad since that is not right. When I went to England last month, I was not sure what I would do. I finalised the deal only after I saw the training methods and the infrastructure there... frankly, I was extremely impressed.

"Thereafter, I spoke to my family and other wellwishers and decided to turn professional," said the 75 kg pugilist from Bhiwani.

According to Vijender's promoter, Francis Warren, the Indian boxer would be involved in six fights from September, 2015, to July next year. "His seventh bout could be in India if everything goes to plan," the Englishman said.

"My aim is to become the champion, but it is only the beginning in a completely new world," said Vijender. "I have to take it step by step. I have to go through several rounds of fights before I can aim for the top.

"The world of professional boxing is extremely ruthless. I might end up with a rather disfigured face. But I have decided to take up the challenge at this stage of my career. I would do everything to emerge champion," added Vijender.

Vijender's trainer in the professional circuit, Lee Beard, said the Indian had the "spark" to move to the top among professionals. "Obviously Vijender is just making his debut as a pro boxer... he has just turned pro.

"But then, Vijender had been a top level amateur. He is very competitive and strong, both physically and mentally. He wants to win... He has the drive. Vijender has the spark."
