Calcutta: The unpleasant exchanges between the Board of Control for Cricket in India's acting president Chandra Kishore Khanna and acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary have showed the under-scrutiny institution in extremely poor light.
Distribution of complimentaries from the Board office-bearers' quotas is what triggered the firing of missiles between the two.
Now, The Telegraph learns that the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA), an affiliate of the Board, has complained to the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators about the manner in which Khanna distributed his quota of 50 complimentaries during the October 1 India vs Australia ODI.
The complimentaries were for the President's Box at the VCA Stadium in Jamtha, which is on the outskirts of Nagpur. Entry to that exclusive enclosure is heavily restricted.
According to well-placed sources, Khanna gave away at least 20 complimentaries to a former office-bearer of the VCA, despite the gentleman not having asked for any. Aware of the sanctity of the President's Box, he didn't utilise them.
The VCA continues to be identified with former president Shashank Manohar, who heads the International Cricket Council at this point in time. Manohar, one may recall, has always been a stickler for protocol.
Manohar's influence is evident today as well.
Worse, Khanna (who himself stayed away from the ODI) distributed "many complimentaries" to people who had nothing to do with the Board and, perhaps, with the game itself.
That individuals not associated with the Board saw the ODI from the President's Box is what upset the VCA. Its executive committee then decided to complain to the Supreme Court-appointed body, which is headed by Vinod Rai.
Till Monday evening, however, it wasn't clear what action Rai would take.
Whatever is decided by Rai, it's hugely embarrassing that an affiliate had to actually complain against the acting president of the Board.
It's interesting that the VCA has often taken an independent line and was the first affiliate to implement the Justice Rajendra Mal Lodha committee's recommendations, which got endorsed by the Supreme Court in its order of July 18, 2016.
A vast majority of the Board's affiliates have so far not acted on the order and are still hoping for some relief from the Supreme Court.
The Khanna-Choudhary row had been over the distribution of complimentaries during the India vs Australia T20I in Hyderabad on October 13.
Khanna and Choudhary have, over a period of time, been having differences on a range of issues and it hasn't helped that the Board continues to see different power centres.
While India won the ODI in Jamtha, the T20I had to be abandoned owing to a wet outfield. Even that was a huge embarrassment to the Khanna-headed Board.
