World No.5 Elina Svitolina produced a solid performance to dispatch Simona Halep 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth round of the US Open here on Sunday.

Svitolina kept up the momentum in the second set, producing three aces and winning more than 80 per cent of her first-serve points.

Unseeded Dutch Botic van de Zandschulp won a four-hour-19-minute long fourth-round thriller against Diego Schwartzman of Argentina, the 11th seed. The 25-year-old won 6-3, 6-4, 5-7, 5-7, 6-1.

Second seed Daniil Medvedev had an easy outing against British 24th seed Daniel Evans, defeating him 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Barty upset

World No.1 Ashleigh Barty became the latest high-profile player to be ousted from the US Open after the Australian suffered a third-round defeat to American Shelby Rogers on Saturday.

The 43rd-ranked Rogers staged a stunning comeback in the deciding set, recovering from a 2-5 deficit to topple Barty 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5) against the backdrop of a roaring Arthur Ashe crowd.

Rogers will face British teenager Emma Raducanu, who extended her dream run at Flushing Meadows with a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Czech fourth seed Karolina Pliskova made quick work of Ajla Tomljanovic, beating the Australian 6-3 6-2. Pliskova sent down 20 aces and raced through the match without dropping serve.

Polish seventh seed Iga Swiatek was stretched to three sets by Estonian Anett Kontaveit, but rallied to reach the fourth round with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

Novak advances

Top seed Novak Djokovic stayed on course for a men’s record 21st major title that would help him complete the calendar Grand Slam with a 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 win over Japan’s Kei Nishikori.

“So far the toughest match of the tournament for me,” the Serbian said. “The pace of the ball and the speed of Nishikori’s tennis today was just higher than the opening two rounds’ opponents that I had.”

For the first time this week New York fans, who have not always embraced Djokovic, got behind the history-hunting Serb, showering him with cheers that had largely gone to his opponents.

“Yeah, the crowd was involved. It was loud. It was nice. I thrived on that,” Djokovic said.

Fourth seed Alexander Zverev secured a spot in the next round after American opponent Jack Sock was forced to retire early in the fourth set due to a thigh injury.

South African Lloyd Harris upset seventh seed Denis Shapovalov of Canada winning 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in just over two hours.

Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini came through his first five-setter of the tournament against Belarusian Ilya Ivashka 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

Bopanna in last 16

Indian Rohan Bopanna and his Croatian partner Ivan Dodig advanced to the men’s doubles pre-quarter finals with a three-set win over the pair of Hugo Nys of Monaco and Arthur Rinderknech of France.

The 14th seed Indo-Croatian pair won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 over their unseeded rivals in one hour and 56 minutes on Saturday night.
