A clinical display helped England thrash Bangladesh by eight wickets in Wednesday’s Super 12 game at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi and notch up their second straight victory in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Explosive opener Jason Roy led from the front with a 38-ball 61 to make his 50th T20I appearance memorable as England, in pursuit of 125, cantered home in just 14.1 overs to give their net run rate a further boost after an easy win over defending champions West Indies in their tournament opener.

Dawid Malan remained unbeaten on 28, while Jonny Bairstow (eight not out) finished off the chase, pulling Shoriful Islam for a boundary. With two wins in a row, England now lead Group I with four points.

Defending a paltry total, Bangladesh never showed any aggressive intent and their bowlers lacked discipline. On a pitch that was a bit two-paced, their pacers were guilty of bowling short as the England opening duo of Roy and Jos Buttler (18) were in no trouble whatsoever.

Left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed dismissed Buttler against the run of play, but Roy continued with the good work as England cruised to 90/1 at the halfway mark, needing just 35 more off 60 balls.

Roy was in full control of the innings and reached his fifty — his second in T20 World Cups — off only 33 balls.

Earlier, England bowlers capitalised on a fine start given by off-spinner Moeen Ali to restrict Bangladesh to a paltry 124/9. Opting to bat, Bangladesh were sloppy and failed to apply themselves as they lost wickets at regular intervals, with openers Liton Das and Mohammad Naim gifting their wickets away to Moeen (2/18).

Pacer Chris Woakes was also on the job inside the Powerplay as he dismissed star all-rounder Shakib-al Hasan, reducing Bangladesh to 27/3 in the first six overs.
