New Delhi, July 3 :
Bengal?s divers maintained their impressive showing at the 16th sub-junior national aquatic championships here today. Suparna Pal bagged her second gold of the meet in highboard diving while Tanya Ganguly got a silver in the 1-metre spring board diving, girls II category.
In the boys group II category, Dipendu Parmanik got a bronze. Biplab Dey also earned two bronze medals in swimming.
Suparna, who had won the gold in the 3m springboard diving yesterday, won comfortably today. She totalled 296.35 points, 36 points ahead of second placed Szewinska D?Mello of Goa, in the highboard diving girls I category.
Tanya narrowly lost to the promising Shruti Shrivastva of Madhya Pradesh in the 1-m springboard event, group II category (under-15 years). Tanya finished with 256.60 points, just four points adrift of Shruti?s total of 260.80 points. Dipendu missed the silver by a mere two points. The second placed Mrinal Raikar of Goa had a total of 278.20 points, while Dipendu managed 276.90 points.
In the six diving finals decided today, Maharashtra asserted their supremacy winning two golds. Manipur, Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh won one gold medal each.
Karnataka and Maharashtra again ruled supreme in the pool. Both bagged three gold medals each. Rehan Poncha, coached by Nihar Ameen at the K.C. Reddy Swimming Centre in Bangalore, set the only meet record in the championships so far. A student of St. Joseph?s School, Rehan broke the meet record of Rohan D?Souza, also of Karnataka, in the 200m individual medley, set at Ludhiana last year.
Rehan clocked 2:24.12, three seconds ahead of Rohan?s mark. Silver medallist Parikshit Shetty also bettered the existing mark. Later Rehan won the the 100 m backstroke title.
Young Biplab Dey, a trainee at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Eastern centre in Calcutta got bronze medals in both the 200 metres individual medley and the 100 m backstroke events.
Maharashtra?s Shruti Reddy and Parikshit Shetty won the 50 m freestyle events in both the girls and boys sections. Shruti also bagged two other golds today. She won the 100 m backstroke, just a stroke ahead of promsing Ambica NS Iyengar of Karnataka.
