Indians advance

Suzhou: India enjoyed a profitable opening day with Shamini Kumaresan qualifying for the main draw of the women's singles event at the World Table Tennis Championships. In the men's singles qualification group, G. Sathiyan and Sanil Shetty entered the next stage.

Chess tourney

Chengdu: Indian women's team came up with a superlative performance to win 3.5-0.5 against a strong Polish team in the 8th and penultimate round of World Women team chess championship here on Monday.

Lee's ban

Kuala Lumpur: Former World No.1 Lee Chong Wei has been handed an eight-month sanction for a doping violation, but the Malaysian star shuttler will be able to return to international badminton next month as the ban was backdated from August 30.

India champions

New Delhi: Rakesh Kumar (69kg) and Harpal Singh (75kg) struck gold as India were crowned champions for the first time in the 22nd President's Cup Boxing Tournament in Palembang, Indonesia. The Indian team logged 33 points to finish ahead of second-placed Mongolia.

Suspension

New Delhi: The All India Football Federation has suspended three players for misconduct. They are Dempo SC's Sheikh Jewel Raja and Prabir Das and Mohun Bagan striker Balwant Singh for two I-League matches after a meeting here.

United SC win

Calcutta: United SC registered a comfortable 3-0 win over Kenkre Sports in their second division I-League Round X encounter in Golaghat on Monday. Kingsley, Jagannath Sana and Rajon Barman scored to take United SC to fifth in the standings with 13 points from 10 matches.


Rahul discharged

Calcutta: Calcutta Police’s Rahul Ghosh, who was hospitalised after sustaining a head injury during the CAB second division championship play-off semi-final, was discharged on Monday. His team was bundled out for 156 in the play-off final versus Kolkata Union SC. 

Final postponed

Calcutta: The CAB inter-district final between Siliguri and North 24 Parganas, which was supposed to take place on Thursday at the Kalighat ground, has been postponed due to another earthquake in Siliguri on Monday.
