Juve win 32nd title

Rome: Juventus won Serie A for the fifth season in a row without kicking a ball on Monday after Napoli, the only team that could have caught them, were sunk 0-1 by a late Radja Nainggolan goal at AS Roma. Juventus were left with an unassailable 12-point lead with three games each left to play as they clinched a record 32nd league title.

Aizawl to appeal

Silchar: Relegated Aizawl FC have decided to appeal to the AIFF to allow them to take part in the next I-League as they stood a place above the bottom-placed team in the table. Though debutants DSK Shivajians ended the league at the bottom with 15 points from 16 matches, they escaped the drop but by virtue of being a corporate team.

FPAI awards

Calcutta: Mohun Bagan's Jeje Lalpekhlua was Monday declared the Indian Player of the Year by the Football Players Association of India (FPAI) at its annual awards function held in Mumbai. East Bengal's Nigerian striker Ranti Martins was named the Foreign Player of the Year. Bengaluru FC's Ashley Westwood was adjudged Coach of the Year.

Ministry aid

New Delhi: In a boost to Rio-bound athletes, the sports ministry has decided to provide Rs one lakh per month as Out of Pocket allowance to the sportspersons under the TOP scheme in their preparation for the Olympics and Paralympics Games at Rio de Janeiro.

Kuala Lumpur: Joshna Chinappa crossed the opening hurdle, defeating Victoria Lust of England 11-8, 11-3, 11-5 in the women's world squash championship here on Monday.

Final loss

Suttgart: Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis suffered an upset defeat in the women's doubles final of the Stuttgart Open tennis tournament as they conceded one set advantage to go down 6-2, 1-6, 6-10 to Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic.

Mairaj's silver

New Delhi: Indian shooter Mairaj Ahmed Khan made a successful start to his campaign at the ISSF World Cup by winning a silver medal in men's skeet event in Rio de Janeiro. Mairaj's feat gave India its first skeet medal at a World Cup.

Marathon death

London: David Seath, a 31-year-old officer in the British army, died after collapsing just three miles short of the 26-mile London Marathon finish line, the event organisers said on Monday. In the London Marathon's 35-year history, 11 participants have died.
