Calcutta: Former India football captain Shabbir Ali suffered a massive heart attack on Monday afternoon.

“Shabbir Ali suffered a massive cardiac arrest at the emergency department. He was resuscitated and admitted in the Critical Care Unit under Dr Suresh Choraria, Direcort (Interventional Cardiology). He is on ventilator and cardio protective medicine support. He is in a critical state,” a medical statement from the Woodlands stated.

An Allahabad Bank Scale-I officer, Shabbir suffered a cardiac arrest around 1:30pm at his Mission Row office. He was rushed to Woodlands by his colleagues but suffered another heart attack — this time a massive one — while the doctors were mulling over his ECG report.

“We rushed him to the hospital after he suffered first stroke at the office at around 1:30pm. He suffered another stroke, just after the ECG was done,” one of his colleagues said.

Family sources told The Telegraph from Hyderabad that son Zafar and nephew Abid have rushed to Calcutta. Abid flew in from Mumbai.

“Doctors attending to him said that his heart has been severely damaged. He has been kept at the ICCU under artificial machine support. Doctors said he will be kept under observation for 48 hours before deciding on the next course of action,” he said.
