Calcutta, Aug. 11 :    Calcutta, Aug. 11:  Saptarshi Roy, requiring only a draw, predictably split point in his final-round game against Ananya Sarkar to emerge champion in the 12th The Telegraph Schools? Chess Championship at Gorky Sadan today. The Kishore Bharati boy finished with a score of 9.5 points and pocketed Rs 3,000 apart from being awarded The Telegraph trophy. He also collected 39 rating points. This was the first time a school meet was granted Fide rating. Three players were tied on nine points and Ananya, of Julien Day, Kalyani, took the second spot on better progressive score. Bharat Gupta of Rajasthan finished third, while Dushyant Das of Bihar came fourth. The two top players will get direct entry to the Millennium Open Rating tournament to be organised by the Alekhine Chess Club from October 24. Ananya and Baisakhi Das of Howrah Jogesh Chandra Girls School were the stars of the meet as both achieved part ratings. Laban Hrad Vidyapith of Salt Lake, represented by Niloy Roy Chaudhury (8), Ayan Lahiri (8) and Abhinava Ghosh (7), was declared the best school in the championship. Bharat Gupta today outplayed Punit Jaiswal of Keshav Academy on the second board in 30 moves in the Queen?s Gambit. Bharat castled on the Queenside and launched a Kingside attack which fetched him a piece along with the point. Syed Ejaz Hussain of Bangladesh went down to Dushyant Das in 25 moves in the Siclian defence. Hussain won a pawn in the centre but weakened his Kingside which cost him the game. Soham Das of Salkia Kedarnath Institution got the better of Atanu Nag Majumder of Bally J.A.V. in 40 moves on the fourth board in a Nimzowitz defence.
