Calcutta: Subrata Paul’s brilliant performance under the bar made all the difference between Dempo SC and Pune FC (PFC), in a Federation Cup Group C match, at the Salt Lake Stadium, on Saturday.
The Derrick Perreira-coached side edged past Dempo 2-1 thanks to goals by Keita Mandjou and Jeje Lalpekhlua in the first half. Peter Carvalho reduced the margin for the Goan team at the fag-end of the match.
Dempo were pushed on the backfoot as early as in the seventh minute.
Jeje played a through pass to Guinean striker Keita, who slalomed past defender Mahesh Gawli to give the lead. Jeje made it 2-0 when he headed in an Othallo Tabia delivery from the right.
There was a bizarre incident. PFC’s Lester Fernandez was shown a red card because of wearing a wrong jersey! After playing the first half in his original shirt number 22, Fernandez wore Srikanth Ramu’s jersey, numbered 25.
The fourth referee noticed it when PFC wanted to change a player and the referee gave marching orders to Lester.
