ONGC hand EB their first defeat

Mumbai: I-League toppers East Bengal tasted their first defeat as ONGC shocked them 1-0 in a 14th round I-League encounter, here Saturday.

Baba Tunde proved to be the hero for ONGC as he scored the only goal of the match in the 58th minute.

ONGC, who were languishing at the bottom of the table prior to this match with just a solitary win, now have 10 points from 14 matches following this upset.

Despite this loss, East Bengal continue to be at the top of the table with 31 points from 14 matches.

In Margao, Dempo’s Joaquim Abranches and Ranty Martins scored a goal in each half to down Churchill Brothers 2-0.

Despite the absence of playmaker Beto due to double booking, controlled the midfield admirably with Climax Lawerence and Kalu Nnanu and with good support from the flanks from Clifford Miranda and Peter Carvalho stitched some good moves.

They had the early chance to take the lead but Ranty flick from close was put out by rival ’keeper Arindam Bhattacharya with his leg after he was fed by Debabrata Roy.

Churchill Brothers found the going tough to breach the rival defence led by Mahesh Gawli.

He did man to man marking and did not allow them space to operate inside the box, came with a counter move few minutes later but Boima Karpeh lacked the direction as the ball went off the target.

Earlier, Steven Dias shot from a free kick was parried away by keeper Chowdhury.

In Bangalore, HAL and JCT shared points as neither of the teams came close to scoring or taking a genuine strike, worth for a goal.
