Calcutta: The arrival of a hard taskmaster in Ashok Malhotra as coach, two years back, had certainly raised hopes of a turnaround for Bengal. But after an inspiring show in his first season, Bengal couldn't even get past the Ranji Trophy group stage in the last season, though they managed to reach the Vijay Hazare semi-finals.
As of now, a final decision on whether Malhotra's two-year contract will be extended hasn't been taken. But according to sources, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is not too keen on continuing with him.
It was learnt that names of Robin Singh, Pravin Amre, Venkatesh Prasad and other former India internationals have already been discussed for the Bengal coach's post. The selectors, too, had a meeting on Thursday to discuss about the matter.
"As far as the present scenario is concerned, it is unlikely that Malhotra will be retained as coach. He wasn't keeping well, while the CAB also wants to look forward," an insider said.
"Several names have been discussed as of now - Robin Singh, Amre, Prasad, Sairaj Bahutule and Paras Mhambrey. It might take a bit of time to finalise everything. You can expect an official announcement after the IPL final (on May 24).
"Sourav (Ganguly) is in favour of getting Robin for the role. He has already discussed the matter with Robin. He's specific about his choice...
"Don't be surprised if Robin signs a contract after May 24," the insider added. Former India all-rounder, Robin, is part of the Mumbai Indians' coaching staff at present.
Malhotra, meanwhile, claimed that the CAB is yet to inform him on its decision. "Look, as far as I know, my contract runs till September... That's it... As of now, I haven't been informed about anything by the association. That's the only thing I can say at the moment," he said.<>
