Kundu still in lead

Calcutta: Satyajit Kundu of Vivekanda Mission School continued to lead the fray with 8.5 points after the end of the ninth round of The Telegraph Schools’ Chess Championship, being presented by Himani Sona Chandi Chawayanprash and organised by Alekhine Chess Club, at Gorky Sadan, on Monday.

Sayantan Das and Chandrashish Majumder, with eight points, are close on Satyajit’s heels.

Playing Black, against Aditya Chakraborti of Delhi Public School, Ruby Park, Satyajit warded off Aditya’s attack with gusto, and later launched a counter attack to earn full point.

Chandrasish, of St Xavier’s Collegiate School, outplayed Samrat Ghorai of Dishari Public School by launching a sharp kingside attack in Sicilian defence.

Sayantan Das of Scottish Church Collegiate School won against Saurabh Mondal of Jharkhand, to set up a clash with Satyajit in the final round.

Asian under-8 champion Mitrabha Guha of South Point upset 12th seed Dhee Sankar of St Marya’s Orphanage and Day School, to take his tally to seven points.

The 10th (final) round games will start at 9.30 am on Tuesday.
