Calcutta: Kapil Dev believes the speculation over Mahendra Singh Dhoni's future should stop and it's best left to the selectors to take a decision.
"Aren't the five selectors doing a good job? If they think Dhoni isn't good enough, they will remove him. I'm not the one to pass a judgement. I feel embarrassed to step into somebody else's shoes," India's first World Cup-winning captain said on Saturday.
"If Dhoni has the ability to carry on, let him continue. I wish him luck. If he can play 100 more matches then it's fine. We've to leave certain things to the selectors. When they think the country needs a change they will do so," he said.
Kapil was in the city to present the design and innovation awards at 'Konstrukt 2016', organised by SRMB Steel, at Swissotel.
India's performance in the World T20 has pleased the legendary all-rounder.
"India were fabulous. They were very good. I never thought they would play this well... They struggled a bit but managed to win. But on that day, West Indies were the better side.
"The problem is you want India to win all matches. I also want the same but others have also come to win. During the 2007 World T20 when Joginder Sharma bowled the last over and India won, everyone hailed it as a unique idea. But now questions are being raised since India lost and Virat Kohli bowled the last over.
"I don't see it that way. Respect other teams when they are better... What a fine final Eden Gardens witnessed.
"I really can't answer why India lost. It was great to see a West Indies-England final... If it was bad there wouldn't have been 65,000 people watching... Every sport has its own charm. Remember the spectators make the game, not the players. Every sport is dependant on its spectators."
Kapil was all praise for Carlos Brathwaite. "It was a great performance. We watch T20 because such things happen. I wish him all the luck and hope West Indies prosper in all formats. England too played well in the final but West Indies deserved to win on that day."
Kapil also didn't wish to compare Virat with Sachin Tendulkar. "Sachin is a legend... Virat is doing well. Why compare them? It's not good to compare."
<>He didn't wish to comment on whether India needed a foreigner as coach. Asked whether Rahul Dravid should be made India coach or a foreigner would be better, Kapil remained non-committal.
"I would leave the judgement to the selectors to pick the coach. That's not my duty. Then there's also the cricket advisory committee. Sourav Ganguly is a member of the committee and he's always in favour of a foreign coach. So ask him... I'm not there and wouldn't like to say anything. I wouldn't like to interfere with somebody else's job."
Meanwhile, it was announced that SRMB Steel will be a sponsor for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 9.
