Mumbai: While the Kapil Devs are going gaga over Virender Sehwag, who is playing in his 100th Test, Aunshuman Gaekwad is of the opinion that the opener hasn’t performed to his fullest potential.

Gaekwad was the coach when Sehwag made his India debut, in an ODI against Pakistan, in Mohali (April 1999). His maiden Test appearance was two-and-a-half years later, in South Africa.

“If you ask me, Sehwag hasn’t done complete justice to his enormous talent... I mean, keep the orthodox Sachin Tendulkar to one side, and I haven’t seen anybody like Sehwag,” Gaekwad, a former India opener, told The Telegraph on Friday.

Gaekwad added: “In my view, had Sehwag actually played to his full potential, then he could have achieved three-four times more... Easily... That’s the enormous ability he has...

“However, I shouldn’t be misunderstood... It’s just that I feel he hasn’t done justice to his special talent... No footwork, but what a hand-eye coordination!”

Gaekwad coached Gujarat for some years after the end of his India innings, but isn’t doing so now. He’s into a bit of TV work, though.

Meanwhile, Shane Warne has described Sehwag as the “most destructive” opening batsman, certainly from 1991-92, when the colourful and benchmark-creating leggie made his Australia debut.
