Manchester United’s Premier League match against Liverpool was postponed after fans invaded the Old Trafford pitch in protest against the club’s owners on Sunday.

Around 200 United fans took to the pitch before being removed, although some returned.

The match was being played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 restrictions.

There were reports of a protest outside the hotel where the United players were preparing for the game, according to BBC. Some fans also gathered outside the ground, letting off green and gold flares — the colours of United’s shirts when they were formed as Norton Heath.

The protest follows United’s initial decision to join a European Super League along with five other English clubs. The plans for that league fell apart within days due to widespread opposition.

Arsenal win

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored on his first start since recovering from malaria as Arsenal prepared for their Europa League showdown against Villarreal with a confidence-boosting win away to Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Mohamed Elneny scored his first Premier League goal for the Gunners, before Aubameyang — on his first start since 3 April — secured the points in the second half.

Arsenal trail 2-1 after the away leg of their semi-final tie with Villarreal and victory in the north east of England was their first in four games.
