On a day some of the uncapped Indian women cricketers scored big in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction, runs deserted the senior India Women players as they lost the second T20I and the series to England Women on Saturday.

India looked clueless as they were dismissed for their third-lowest total — 80 in 16.2 overs. England’s chase was not without hiccups, but they eventually won the game by four wickets to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Shafali Verma (0), Smriti Mandhana (10), skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (9), Deepti Sharma (0) — they all cut a sorry figure.

In reply, England reached their target in 11.2 overs.

For India, Jemimah Rodrigues was the lone bright spot with a 33-ball 30 and was only one of the two batters to get a double-digit score.

India’s top four batters were all out leg before and it showed their lack of application on a batting-friendly Wankhede wicket.

This was India’s third lowest total in women’s T20Is behind 62 (vs Australia, 2011) and 70 (vs South Africa, 2019).

It was a clinical display by England as all their six bowlers returned with at least one wicket.

In defence of their paltry 80, India had a horror start with a wayward Renuka Singh leaking eight runs in four wide deliveries.

Renuka rectified herself to take two wickets, but England counterattacked to take the game away.

Their match aggregate of 162 runs was also the lowest involving the two teams.

Brief scores: India Women 80 in 16.2 ovs (Jemimah Rodrigues 30). England Women 82/6 in 11.2 ovs. England Women won by 4 wickets.
