Calcutta: Australian bowling coach Craig McDermott says he does not believe an overhaul of Pat Cummins' action was needed after the fast bowler suffered the third major back injury of his disjointed international career.

"He's just going to be disappointed he's got injured again and he's got another road back of six or seven months before he is back playing competitive cricket at a high level again.

He's already shown he can do it in all three formats so we've just got to be patient with him. He'll do the rehab work, no doubt, and working your way back from those things is not much fun. It's long, tedious work ... but he's been through it and I'm sure he'll do the same," McDermott said of Cummins, who has been replaced in Australia's Test squad for Bangladesh by James Faulkner.

"I don't think he'll have any problems whatsoever dealing with this. He's very mature, very meticulous with his preparation, and he'll be back bigger and better than ever," Sydney Morning Herald quoted McDermott.

Cummins has been mostly free of injury since August 2013, when he injured his back for the second time. McDermott said the 22-year-old had not only stringently followed that rehabilitation programme but also adhered to the lessons given about his bowling action to minimise the pressure on his back from bowling. Within the past fortnight, McDermott has studied recent video of Cummins' bowling action and been generally satisfied with it.

"As a coach I'm disappointed, but personally I'm very disappointed for him because he's put in so much work over the past two years to get back to where he was. His application and dedication throughout the England series ... was just brilliant, and obviously he bowled the house down in the one-day series ... and his speeds were fantastic," McDermott said.

"He probably had a little bit more lateral flexion than you'd like, but when you're bowling that sort of speed you're going to create that... for a bowler to bowl at that speed has to get their coil from somewhere. It's just unfortunate his body hasn't coped with it and he's got a crack."

McDermott said Cummins had bowled enough during the past home summer that he had been ready to make a Test return since the series in the West Indies, had he been required.

He also lauded the discipline shown by the New South Welshman during the Ashes, for which he was a late addition (for Ryan Harris) but did not play a Test.
