London: Cristiano Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes has said it would be “impossible” for Manchester United to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid.
Mendes, the super agent who brokered United deals for Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria, admits that the Portuguese international remembers his time at Old Trafford fondly, but “will always be at Real Madrid.”
United have been told it would cost around £140 million to sign 29-year-old Ronaldo, with Real Madrid demanding a £60 million transfer fee and the player a four-year contract worth £20m a year. In an interview with Spanish TV show Elpartidodelas12, Mendes said: “Cristiano holds United dear to his heart because he was there six years. But now he just thinks of Real Madrid and he will always be there, and he is thrilled.
“People know that it is impossible to get Ronaldo to leave Real Madrid. Ronaldo is the best player ever. He keeps improving and while he has affection towards United, he wants to stay at Real Madrid.
“He is happy there, he has a great relationship with the president, and has a long contract: he will retire at Real Madrid. He respects the people who remember him, but he is with Madrid to the death.
“There won’t be any player as good as him for the next 500 years. Ronaldo is a very humble and family-focused person… A spectacular father... He is the son any mother would want to have.”
Ronaldo has scored in every league game he has played this season, including a 2-0 victory at Villarreal where a Manchester United supporters’ group hired a plane to fly over the El Madrigal Stadium with a banner reading ‘Come Home Ronaldo’. The former Sporting Lisbon player revealed that he saw the banner but when asked about it, said: “I’m good in Madrid.”
Last year, he signed a new and improved five-year deal that will see him stay at the Bernabeu until 2018, when he is 33. By then, he is expected to have set a number of new records with the Spanish giants.
Real manager Carlo Ancelotti will be pleased by the comments. The Italian, who has managed a vast number of world-class players during his time in the dugout with clubs including AC Milan, Chelsea and Paris St. Germain, said recently that Ronaldo is the best player he has worked with.
“Without disrespecting anyone else, Cristiano is the best player I have coached,” he had said. He had added that “without a doubt”, the Portuguese would win this year’s Ballon d’Or for the second year running.
Ronaldo’s most recent hat-trick during Sunday’s 5-0 dismantling of Athletic Bilbao took him to a record mark of 22 trebles in La Liga, alongside legendary figures Alfredo Di Stefano and Telmo Zarra.
The Portugal captain now has 269 goals in 257 games for Madrid, within reach of Di Stefano’s total of 307 and Raul's club record of 323.
Ronaldo is set to return to Manchester next month, but it will be in national colours as Portugal take on Argentina in a friendly on November 18.
