New Delhi, Nov. 3:
Churchill 2 East bengal 1
Jct 2 Muktijoddha 0
It was a double blow for East Bengal in the Allwyn Durand Cup today.
They suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 1-2 to Churchill Brothers in a group 2 quarter final league match. Then, ace defender Deepak Mondal suffered an injury on his forehead, following a collision with Stephen Abarowei, which required five stitches. Coach Syed Nayeemuddin said Mondal will miss the crucial match against JCT on Sunday.
There was another setback for the Calcutta team when Ghanaian striker Siva Mumumi limped off after 13 minutes.
Midfielder Jose Colaco opened scoring for the Goans in the 24th minute and stopper Osumanu Husseini converted a free-kick in the 30th. East Bengal reduced in the 53rd minute through a free-kick from Chandan Das.
The win helped Churchill reach the Durand semi-finals for the first time. They now top the group with six points from two matches and also have a healthy goal difference of plus four.
East Bengal and JCT are joint-second with three points each from two matches. However, the Calcutta League champions have a superior goal difference and need just a draw to advance to the semi-finals. Muktijoddha have been eliminated following two losses.
Nayeem feels that this match should not be seen as a setback but as a wake-up call. He is confident of a comeback. The 'Dronacharya' felt that the early injuries upset his plan. Mondal's absence was severely felt as with his speed, anticipation and reflexes, Mondal was neutralising the threat of Abarowei.
The injury occured in the second minute. Following a Noel Wilson lob, Stephen and Mondal jumped for the ball. Mondal claimed that Stephen struck him with his elbow. However, Stephen said Mondal's forehead struck the back of his head.
Substitute Anit Ghosh tucked in as central midfielder and Dipendu Biswas moved up. Attacks from the left became sporadic, as left-back Ratan Singh, who is not fully fit, rarely overlapped. Maybe it would have been wiser to use Dipnakar Roy.
Falguni Dutta was all at sea in the midfield when he came in place of Mondal. The midfield became bereft of imagination and thrust with Suley Mussah falling back to help Jackson in defence. It was only with the introduction of veteran Tushar Rakshit at the hour that East Bengal took charge of the proceedings and brought back some variety in their attack.
In a clash of cousins, Noel Wilson had the distinct edge over Carlton Chapman, who headed out from six yards following a free kick in the 46th minute. East Bengal rejects Somatai Shaiza and Ajay Kumar Singh also excelled in midfield for Churchill.
Churchill scored the first goal due to some quick thinking by Abarowei. Sensing he could not outwit his marker, he passed back to Colaco and then body-blocked Jackson. Colaco let fly the volley from 20 yards out.
Eight minutes later, Noel feigned to pass to his right from a free kick and back-heeled to Ousmanu whose scorching shot bulged the net with the East Bengal wall in disarray.
In the 53rd minute, Chandan's powerful free-kick from 30 yards out reduced the margin. The goal rejuvenated East Bengal. Prompt tries by overlapping Mussah and Jackson were blocked by goalkeeper Ansah. Falguni shot over, after some deft dribbling by Bijen. Tushar put Dipendu through but the latter delayed and his shot was blocked. Bijen took a back volley off the rebound which Ansah rushing back tipped over for a corner kick.
