London: Greg Rusedski’s tennis future was in doubt after the British No. 2 split from coach Sven Groeneveld for the second time Thursday.
The London Evening Standard reported that the cause of this latest split was Rusedski’s inability to name a comeback date from an operation on his feet.
Canadian-born Rusedski, 29, has had operations on both feet in successive years and the former US Open finalist now seems set to miss Britain’s Davis Cup tie away against Australia in February.
Washington: Basketball legend Michael Jordan will retire next spring, ending a 14-year playing career that began in 1984 with the Chicago Bulls, the Washington Post reported in its Friday edition.
“Right now I’m fulfilling my contract,” Jordan, who is in the final season of a two-year, $2.1 million deal with the Washington Wizards, told the Post. “At the end of this season I’m not looking to enter another contract.”
Jordan said he plans to resume his role as the Wizards’ president of basketball operations after the current season.
Jordan, 39, came out of his second retirement before last season after working as the Wizards’ top basketball official since January 19, 2000. He signed a two-year, $2.1 million contract upon his return to the court.
New Delhi: Not satisfied with the findings of the one-man inquiry committee which probed the doping cases of weightlifters K. Madaswamy and Sateesha Rai at the Manchester Commonwealth Games in July, the sports ministry has asked the Sports Authority of India (SAI) to inquire into the matter further for “fixing responsibility.”
Replying to a written question in the Rajya Sabha, P. Radhakrishnan, minister of state of youth affairs and sports, said the director general of SAI has been asked to further inquire into the matter for fixing responsibilty. It was found that the one-man committee report has not adequately gone into some vital issues pertaining to the incidents, he said.
Milan: AC Milan forward Rivaldo will miss his side’s Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund on December 11 after being ruled out for up to three weeks with a thigh muscle strain.
Milan said on Friday that the Brazilian World Cup winner had picked up the injury during Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Real Madrid in their opening group C game.
Rivaldo has finally begun to live up to expectations for Milan — setting up the goal in the 1-0 derby win over Inter on Saturday and producing his best performance since moving to Italy from Barcelona during the close-season against Real.
His absence will give coach Carlo Ancelotti the chance to play strikers Andriy Shevchenko and Filippo Inzaghi together.
