Calcutta, July 12 :
BNR 1
Tollygunge 0
For someone who has breathed so much life into local football with his coaching skills, Amal Dutta is hopelessly naive at times. Today, he brought the soaring Manaksia Tollygunge Agragami to the Rabindra Sarobar Stadium but forgot about the monsoon, and what it does to football pitches in this part of the world.
His signature short passing game got stuck in the slush and, as BNR pulled off a coup with a well thought out defensive ploy, Dutta had no answer.
The only goal of this Super Division tie, scored by Moinul Haq four minutes after the breather, came off a quick counter-attack. Tollygunge, the new force in local football, were actually lucky to be spared more embarrassment. BNR, making good use of yawning gaps their opponents left behind in the hunt for a goal, came upon several other opportunities.
BNR were even denied a penalty with referee Gautam Sadhukhan failing to see the infringement when, some nine minutes from the final whistle, Rashmohan Mullick brought down Subhashis Chakraborty in the box.
Chakraborty, used as the only front-runner by BNR, had a good game and a big hand in the goal.
Set free on the right with a long ball, Chakraborty beat left-back Mullick and then, confronted by left-stopper Partha Sarathi Dey, played the ball nicely in the path of an onrushing Moinul before the rapidly retreating defence could organise themselves. Moinul cooly shot home past the goalie.
BNR coach Tapanjyoti Mitra must be lauded for coming to the ground with a clear strategy. In fact, he had borrowed a leaf out of Amal Dutta?s book. Soaking in pressure with a packed defensive midfield, BNR relied on the breakaways and, more often than not, these caught the Tollygunge defence napping.
Unable to use the flanks, Tollygunge only made it easier for BNR to crowd them out in the preparatory zone itself. Dutta?s men did not get a real look at goal in the entire match even though they enjoyed a good share of the possession. How the missed the ball skills of Jayanta Sen, who is now at India?s pre-Olympics camp.
Tollygunge will have learnt today that their tapestry of short passes cannot be woven so easily on the slushy grounds of a Calcutta monsoon. Dutta will soon have to find another design.
