Calcutta: Defending champions Mohun Bagan brought up their second win of the ongoing Federation Cup, beating Lajong FC 3-2 at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Wednesday.
Strikes from Darryl Duffy, Sony Norde and Katsumi Yusa cancelled out Pritam Kotal's third-minute own goal and Yuta Kinowaki's 80th-minute conversion to aid Bagan's quest in progressing to the semi-finals.
Group B, however, has been thrown wide open as DSK Shivajians earlier stunned Bengaluru FC 2-0, riding a brace from Spanish import Juan Barraso. Bagan, though, are at the top of the table currently with six points from two matches.
The opening few minutes of the match had it all. An own goal, a field goal and a header which brushed past the vertical... In the third minute itself Pritam was the culprit of getting an own goal in an attempt to clear a cross. But in a space of just two minutes, Bagan levelled proceedings.
Duffy rounded off Vishal Kaith after the Lajong custodian had come way out of his position.
He steered the ball past the hapless Lajong 'keeper and slotted it into the net to bring Bagan back on level terms. There was still more action to come and Lajong rattled the post in the seventh minute after Samuel Shadap's thumping header missed the target by a whisker.
The Duffy-Balwant Singh pair upfront proved to be a handful for Lajong and Sony's ability to carry the ball from midfield added to their woes. The Bagan strike force, assisted from the wings by Katsumi, played with intent and fluidity.
Sony, in the 27th minute, handed Bagan the lead when he timed a free-kick from 25 yards out sent the ball curling into the net. With the first half coming to an end, Katsumi made good use of a Sony shot, which was going off the target, to double Bagan's lead. The half-time scoreline read 3-1 in Bagan's favour.
Even in the second half, Bagan did not take things lightly just because they were leading 3-1. Substitute Prabir Das came close to scoring in the 54th minute, but his shot was saved by Kaith.
Bagan played deep and soaked up the pressure piled on by Thangboi Singto's men. Issac came close to scoring in the 58th minute, but Debjit Majumdar proved a fraction quicker than him and collected the ball to safety.
