Calcutta/ Margao: FC Goa are preparing for a fiery contest against Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) in a second round Indian Super League (ISL) clash at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Wednesday.
Both teams are going into this clash with a win under their belt and FC Goa coach Zico said it was important to carry forward this momentum.
"We had a good win against Delhi Dynamos in the opening game and we must continue winning," said Zico.
FC Goa lost to Atletico de Kolkata last year in the semi-finals and the Goan franchise is now looking at getting their revenge.
"Of course, we are motivated to win. This team has the ambition and desire to win this edition of ISL. This team has players who have played many finals. Last year there was a setback against Atletico de Kolkata. This year, our target remains the same," Zico said during the official pre-match press conference.
"This year, both the teams have made lot of changes in their side and we do not know which team is the best, it will be decided on Wednesday, the one who play better and utilize the chances will emerge winner. Wednesday's encounter is not going to be a revenge match but normal game," he said.
Asked whether the absence of marquee player Helder Postiga will mean FC Goa will have the edge, Zico pointed to his own injured players like Victor Simoes and Bikramjit Singh, while Narayan Das and Pronay Halder are away with the Indian team.
FC Goa have a creative midfield as Leonardo Moura and Joffre Mateu along with Denson Devadas have combined well to keep the attack moving. Romeo Fernades and Mandar Rao Dessai too have worked hard on the flanks and gave the right support for striker Reinaldo Oliveira upfront. Reinaldo was limping and it would be interesting to see whether he plays Wednesday's match.
Brazilian midfielder Moura was alongside Zico at the press meet and likened the atmosphere in Fatorda to the one in Brazil. "The atmosphere in the stadium was reminiscent of Brazil. Spoke to my friend Andre Santos, who played for FC Goa last season and he gave me an idea of the league. It feels like home here," Moura said.
Romeo and Dessai are the most celebrated midfielders in the FC Goa team, but Moura said Denson was equally influential in the midfield. "He is an important player. All the Indians all], or else they wouldn't be in FC Goa. They give us confidence to play our game," Moura concluded.
ATK defeated Chennaiyin FC in the ISL opener in Chennai and coach Antonio Lopez Habas should have been a relieved man. Instead, the Spanish coach has discovered that his Postiga, will be out for three to four weeks.
"I might miss Postiga for a month but I have a lot of confidence in my players. The player who replaced him, Valdo, got us a goal. The important thing is I was happy that we were able to start with win," said Habas.
Habas is likely to give Josemi a start on Wednesday. With no Arnab Mondal - away on national duty - the two central defenders should Josemi and Ofentse Nato.
The Spanish coach said he was happy with the progress his team is making as evident from the opening win in Chennai.
"Compared to last year, there is a big difference in the team this year. This year the players have adapted to my system better. Last year it was new to them. Now they know what I want of them," said Habas.
It was during last Diwali when the contest between these two teams got heated up because of incidents both on and off the field. Fikru Teferra, now in Chennaiyin, was involved in an on-field scuffle with Gregory Arnolin and was later suspended and fined for having headbutted the latter.
Coach Habas too was claimed to have beaten and punched Robert Pires in the face during an alleged tunnel fight.
Both teams would only hope the controversies of last year don't come back to haunt them.
