Calcutta: Mohammedan Sporting suffered a shock 0-1 defeat at the hands of Aryan Club in a CFL Premier Division 'A' match at the Barasat Stadium on Wednesday. Ejiogu Chinedu Emmanuel scored the winner eight minutes before half-time.
After winning their first game against FCI (East Zone), Mohammedan Sporting went into the game as favourites, but Aryan had simple plan in place - they did not allow any Mohammedan Sporting players to play freely.
Mohammedan Sporting's intention was very clear - they went for the kill from the very first minute.
The first real opportunity came after 17 minutes when Aryan goalkeeper Shouvik Santra made a save off a Princewill Emeka attempt' who had done well to turn the defence and put himself into a shooting position. But the Nigerian forward failed to get any real power behind his shot.
Mohammedan Sporting's Lancine Toure also got a chance to score, but he failed to utilise the opportunity. In the 30th minute' Princewill hit a wide from a tight angle and eight minutes later winger Jewel Raja rose unchallenged to head a corner narrowly wide.
Aryan took the lead much against the run of play. Vivek Singh passed it to Emmanuel just outside the box. The latter beat Mohammedan Sporting custodian Priyant Singh with his powerful right footer from close range.
After the change of ends, Mohammedan Sporting were desperate to get the equaliser but Aryan defenders Raju Koley, Kourouma Seydou Mady, Sandip Patra and Sujay Mondal were at their best and not giving Mohammedan Sporting players open space.
Mohammedan Sporting continued to dictate terms at the start of the second-half with substitute Mohammed Amirul shooting narrowly wide of the target five minutes into the session.
Aryan, though, were not to be outdone and came close to scoring in the 54th minute when Kunal Ghosh broke through on goal, but he was superbly denied in a one-on-one by Priyant.
Nandy, as usual, was upset with the result. "We missed easy chances," Nandy said.
On the other hand Aryan's technical director and Nandy's son Rajdeep said: "This was my third match against my father's team. In the last two occasions, I didn't win. This time my dream comes true," the youngest technical director of the CFL said.
