Calcutta: Bengal’s Abhijit Bhattacharya was the only umpire from East Zone to be inducted in the national umpires’ panel when the umpires’ committee met, in Nagpur, on Saturday.

A total of eleven umpires were added to boost the panel, which will be in charge of the domestic matches in the coming season.

It was good news for Premdip Chatterjee and Satrajit Lahiri, too. Both the Bengal umpires were recommended for conducting Ranji Trophy matches.

The committee also decided on the Indian umpires who will officiate in the Champions League T20 matches. Shavir Tarapore, S. Ravi and Sudhir Asnani will be the men in charge. It was also decided that from the next season, in every Indian Premier League (IPL) match, one of the umpires would be an Indian.

The IPL, meanwhile, may see a change in format from next year. In the governing council meeting on Saturday, it was proposed that the number of games in the IPL should be reduced. “It will be discussed in detail in the first governing council meeting next season, after the AGM,” said a source.

The council, however, deferred to take a call on the request of relocation of the Kochi IPL franchise to Ahmedabad.

The franchise had made its debut as the Kochi Tuskers in IPL-IV earlier this year and had sought the BCCI’s permission to relocate its home from Kochi to Ahmedabad.

“That (relocation) matter would be taken up at the Board’s AGM (on September 19 and 20, in Mumbai),” a source said.
