Calcutta: Exactly a year ago, budding cricketer Ankit Keshri had succumbed to an injury he picked up during a local league game. He still remains etched in the memory of his fellow players of the maidan.
Ankit, playing for East Bengal, had collided with a fellow fielder while attempting a catch. The resultant injury was serious and it landed him in hospital. He passed away a couple of days later.
On Tuesday, one caught up with Arnab Nandi during East Bengal's CAB league match against Mohun Bagan. A year ago, it was Nandi for whom Ankit, the 12th man, had come on to the field.
Nandi, who scored an excellent unbeaten 157 against Mohun Bagan on Tuesday, hasn't forgotten the incident. Amidst the excitement of victory, Nandi turned sad when one reminded him about Ankit's death anniversary.
"That was a shocking incident... Even today I can't imagine how that had happened," recalled Nandi.
On the death anniversary of his son on Wednesday, Ankit's father Raj plans to feed some underprivileged children.
Raj, however, complained that not every one who promised help after his son's death have kept their word.
Raj also called up Subir Ganguly, the CAB the joint secretary, on Tuesday.
"He called me on Tuesday afternoon and was asking about the promised payment from the BCCI. But I am not aware about what he has got and what he hasn't," Subir said.
