Eugene: American Ashton Eaton set a decathlon world record when he scored 9,039 points at the US Olympic athletics trials on Saturday.
Eaton, 24, improved on Czech Roman Serbrle’s 2001 record by 13 points.
The world decathlon silver medallist, who set the indoor heptathlon world record earlier this year, won seven of the 10 decathlon events at the trials, securing the world record with a strong 1,500 metres in four minutes 14.48 seconds.
Eaton had already set records for the best 100 metres and long jump legs in decathlon on Friday.
London: Saudi Arabia will allow female athletes to compete in the Olympics for the first time. In a statement from the Saudi Embassy in London, the country's Olympic Committee says it will “oversee participation of women athletes who can qualify.”
The only female competitor at Olympic standard is showjumper Dalma Rushdi Malhas.
