Eugene: American Ashton Eaton set a decathlon world record when he scored 9,039 points at the US Olympic athletics trials on Saturday.

Eaton, 24, improved on Czech Roman Serbrle’s 2001 record by 13 points.

The world decathlon silver medallist, who set the indoor heptathlon world record earlier this year, won seven of the 10 decathlon events at the trials, securing the world record with a strong 1,500 metres in four minutes 14.48 seconds.

Eaton had already set records for the best 100 metres and long jump legs in decathlon on Friday.

London: Saudi Arabia will allow female athletes to compete in the Olympics for the first time. In a statement from the Saudi Embassy in London, the country's Olympic Committee says it will “oversee participation of women athletes who can qualify.”

The only female competitor at Olympic standard is showjumper Dalma Rushdi Malhas.

Calcutta: Ankita Raina bagged her maiden ITF singles crown after thrashing local girl Prerna Bhambri 6-4, 6-2 in the final of the $10,000 ITF Women's meet in New Delhi.

The victory also meant that the 19-year-old completed a grand double, having won the women's doubles title along with partner Aishwarya Agarwal on Saturday.

Madrid: The controversial blue clay surface used for the first time at the Madrid Open last month will be banished next year, the governing body of men’s tennis said on Saturday.

“After careful consideration I have decided blue clay courts will not be allowed next year,” ATP executive chairman and president Brad Drewett said in a statement.

Cromwell: Arjun Atwal managed to make the cut but was lying way down at tied 68th on the leaderboard after the third round of the Travelers Championships here.

Cologne: Shiv Kapur got a rude jolt on the third day as he carded a three-over 75 to slip to tied 22nd in the BMW International Open here.

Prague: Sharmila Nicollet carded a five-over 77 and missed the cut at the Raiffeisenbank Prague Golf Masters here.

Calcutta: Mahendra Singh Dhoni slipped one spot down to fifth while his deputy Virat Kohli remained static at third in the latest ICC ODI batsmen’s chart released on Sunday.

The only other Indian batsman in the top 20 is Guatam Gambhir who remained unchanged at 17th spot on 666 points.

Amomg bowlers, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was the lone Indian in the top 10 as jumped one place to fifth with 676 points.
