Chandigarh: The Inderjit Singh Bindra-headed Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) will soon start building a second stadium, despite a showpiece one in Mohali.

“Over a period of time, we’ve bought 50 acres in what is New Chandigarh... We didn’t buy the land at one go, or else we would have had to pay a fortune,” Bindra told The Telegraph.

Speaking on Thursday, Bindra said that the planning will take “around eight months.” As for the construction proper, it would start as soon as the blueprint is ready.

The new facility will, among other things, have ample space for car parking.

Till recently, the one in Mohali could use a conveniently located plot for VIP parking, but that is now being converted into a hockey stadium by the local administration. It has greatly inconvenienced the PCA.

According to Bindra, the second stadium would have a capacity of “30,000 or thereabouts.” He termed that as “ideal” for the region.

The capacity of the one in Mohali, built in the early 1990s, is down to 30,000 or so after the PCA decided to provide chairs for every spectator.
