Guwahati, July 4 :    Guwahati, July 4:  Manipur's six-and-a-half year old Khumukcham Sanjoy Singh ( three points) pulled off a plucky win over second seed N. Sashank Singh to move into the lead with 11 others at the end of the third round of The Telegraph Schools' Chess Championship today. There are six players half a point behind the leaders. Gurumayum Inao Sharma of MKSMT High School, Imphal, survived a scare from Assam's girls junior champion Malabika Singh of Bordubi Higher Secondary School, Tinsukia. The game petered out into a draw with Malabika, playing white, making a mistake on the 61st move. Khumukcham of Kairang Government Primary School, Imphal, handled the black pieces deftly against Sashank of Nichol's High School, Guwahati, in the Tarrasch Variation of the French Defence. The pawn exchange in the centre on the eighth move also forced Sashank to exchange his knight for his opponent's king bishop. White then had no option but to push the king bishop pawn to support the central pawn. Khumukcham traded the queens on the 18th move to acquire a winning position. A blunder by Sashank on the 24th move sealed the win. In other matches, Meghnath Rabha of Phaguna Rabha High School, Guwahati, checkmated Eldrin Timung of Christian English School, Karbi Anglong, on the 25th move, while Trailokya Nanda of Edith Douglas School, Jorhat, notched up a fine win over Gaurav Pratim Talukdar of Don Bosco High School, Tezpur, in 41 moves.
