Berhampore, Aug. 29 :     Youngsters prevailed over seasoned campaigners in the Murshidabad Swimming Association (MSA) organised 56th 81-km swimming championship here today. Cornering glory was a 15-year-old from Mumbai ? Mayur Mehta ? who took 10 hours, 43 minutes and 57 seconds to emerge winner in the longest swimming meet in India, followed by local favourite Subir Sarkar who clocked 10:53.30. Finishing third was another teenager ? Junaid Bashir Khan of Nasik. He clocked 11:12.53. In all, 24 swimmers, including five women took part in the meet which was flagged off from Ahiron Barrage Ghat, near Jangipur. It was yet another triumph for Mehta, a XIIth standard student, who won a 20.8 km event in Zurich on August 20. ?My next aim is to conquer the English Channel, for which I will become eligible after reaching 16,? said Mehta, who had finished third here in 1997. Mehta finds long-distance swims more challenging than the shorter version. ?I went into the lead after about three hours and did not trail after that,? he said. Bengal?s Kanak Biswas, finished first among women and fifth overall to bag a special prize of Rs 1000 while another Maharashtra youngster, 11-year-old Tejashri Bhinde, pocketed the same amount for being the youngest competitor. RESULTS: 81 km: 1. Mayur Mehta, 2. Subir Sarkar, 3. Junaid Basir Khan; 19 km for men: 1. Prosanta Maullick, 2. Dilip Parui, 3. Litan Halder; 19 km for women: 1. Santana Patra, 2. Tusi Mahanti, 3. Madhabi Halder; Special prize: Kanak Biswas No international flavour Following appeals by the MSA and impressed by the participation of some Bangladeshi swimmers last year, the Swimming Federation of India declared the event as an international meet. However, this year, enthusiasts from across the border chose to stay away, taking some charm off the event.
