Thrissur: Eighteen-year-old Taniya Ganguly of the Railways set a record in the 3m spring board diving event in the 56th national aquatics Thursday.

The talented Taniya retained her title by setting a national record, also the best Indian performance, with a total of 354.95 points, erasing the previous record of 344.65 points (Ishani Ghosh in Mumbai, 1999).

Amrapali Das Gupta of Bengal grabbed the bronze medal in the 200m women’s backstroke, the gold and the silver being shared by sisters Sumy (Railways) and Sony Cyriac (Kerala).

The men’s Bengal waterpolo team crashed out in the semis, losing to Police 2-8.

Karnataka women maintained their supremacy and bagged two gold medals, one silver and one bronze out of the six gold medals decided on the second day of the competition.

Archana Bhushan got the gold in 100m butterfly. Ambica Iyengar bagged her third individual gold winning the 800m freestyle with a timing of 9:47.80 secs. She also helped Karnataka win 4x200 freestyle relay gold.

In 1500m freestyle, Kailash Nath of Police clinched the gold with a time of 16:56.61 secs. He had earlier won the 100 IM and 400 freestyle titles.

Kerala earned their first gold through Senthil Kumar, in 200m backstroke. Senthil, banned for four years after testing positive for dope at the 2000 nationals, was allowed to participate here after the ban period was reduced. (PTI)
