The International Mathematical Olympiad, 2006, in Slovenia is over and like other years, young Chinese, Russians and East Europeans dominated the show. India got five bronze medals. Congratulations to all participants, especially to Apurv Nakade and Riddhipratim Basu. I had chance to look at the final problems of the competition and to be fair, our students did very well. Mathematics education in this country is not at par with others who regularly do well in these competitions. Given this handicap, students who figure in the medal tally are as good if not better than the best in the business of mathematics.
In the Senior Superlatives section of the Sounder yearbook, 12 Summerset High seniors are featured as “Most”s, with a different girl and boy elected by the class as the honouree in each of the six categories; one pair won for Brightest Eyes. Given the yearbook data below, can you find the full names of each girl and boy named for each Senior Superlative?
The six Senior Superlative categories are Most Likely to Succeed, the honour Ophelia won, the award the Walton girl won, the category in which Freddy won, the Ives boy’s Superlative, and the “Most” for which Renee and Brad appear in the Sounder. The Truman girl and Chad were named the same “Most.”
Paula and the Knight boy won in the same category. Derrick is Summerset High’s male Dance Machine; the Walton girl doesn’t share that honour. The Yardley girl and the Ives boy didn't win the same honour.
Chad and the Knight boy are going to attend Cozy Valley College. The Ulman girl and Andy won the same Senior Superlative title, but not the honour as Funniest.
The Zimmer girl and Jones boy were named Best Athletes by the class. The Valdez girl, who isn’t Nina, and the Grace boy won in different “Most” categories.
Honouree Evan, who isn’t Levine, thinks he’s a funny guy, but his classmates did not vote him Funniest boy.
Ophelia, the Truman girl, and Ms. Zimmer all will attend Westham University in the fall.
Freddy, who isn’t Jones or Knight, and the Yardley girl won different Senior Superlative honours. Nina and the Levine boy shared one “Most” category. Monica and the Harmon boy were chosen in different categories.
Samantha’s honour wasn’t as either Funniest or Would Like Most to Have As a Friend.

The response this week (July 24) was great. Sorry for not being able to fit everybody’s name. Brainstormer Shatabdi Basu was neat and methodical in her approach. Here goes her solution.
Solution: Cerise Nokia called from the car wash. The order in which the phone calls were made are as follows:
Lisa Bell was at Pizza Hut when she heard the news. She then immediately passed on the information to Erica South. At that moment she was stationed at Moonlight Skating Rink. She then passed on the latest gossip to Cerise Nokia, at the Sparkle car wash. Cerise then passed on the details to Dawn Linesman, who at that moment was at the Express Store. Linesman, then gossiped with Faith Graham, who was in his bath tub. Graham finally passed on the distorted message to Alicia Alexander at the soccer practice.
