The Face that disappears

Q The Facebook app has disappeared from my Sony Xperia Z5 Premium phone. I am not able to download and instal it again.

Morge Ete

The app can disappear for three reasons. It has been uninstalled, disabled or hidden. First, check if it has been deleted. Open the Play Store app and swipe from left to right. Tap on My apps & games-Installed. If you find the Facebook app there, it has not been uninstalled. Now see whether it has been disabled or not. Go to Settings-Apps. Tap on All apps-Disabled. Find Facebook and press Enable if it has been inadvertently disabled. Finally, check if the app has been hidden. Tap the menu button shown by three dots and press on "Hidden apps".

You should also reset all your app preferences. Press Settings-Apps. Tap the three vertical dots and select Reset app preferences-Reset Apps. Go back to your home screen where all the apps are displayed. Tap the menu button (three dots) and sort your apps by name.

FTTH vs broadband

Q Under my BSNL broadband plan, I am supposed to get speeds of 10 Mbps but I actually get around 4 Mbps. BSNL is pushing their fibre to the home (FTTH) service, but I am not sure. What should I do?

Saikat Kundu

FTTH should theoretically give you better download speed. This is because optical fibres give much better throughput. There is no copper wire involved from the backbone to the central junction point and to the home. You need to check with BSNL whether you will get upload speed greater than 1 Mbps. If so, you should change to FTTH.

Time to update

Q A few months ago, I bought a Xiaomi Mi Pad, which was working nicely. But lately, whenever I open an app, it fails and shows a message: "the app relies on Google Play services, which cannot be maintained without the Google Play Store".

Wanlam Kupar Khongwir

Open the Play Store app and look for updates under My Apps & Games. If updates are available, instal all of them. If the Play Store app does not open, go to Settings. Navigate to Additional Settings-Privacy and allow the installation of apps from unknown sources. From the browser of your tablet, either Chrome or Mi's own browser, download GAPPS from https://www.patch workoftips.com/ ownloads/apps.zip. Extract the files and instal them one at a time. You will now get fresh copies of Google Play Store, Google Play Services, Google Services Framework, Google Calendar Sync, Google Contacts Sync and Google Account Manager.

Now, restart your tablet. Do not open any apps without first rebooting the pad. If you do, the apps will crash. Once the pad reboots, open Play Store and look for updates. Instal all new updates. Next, go to Settings-About Phone-System update. Once again accept all the updates. The apps on your Mi Pad should work fine now.

Net problems

Q I have a Moto E4 Plus with a 4G Airtel SIM. I did get 4G for the first few days, but now it just shows "E".

Subhanu Banerjee

I am afraid there is a problem with the Moto E4 Plus and Airtel's 4G. Your best option is to back up your phone and do a factory reset. Update the software, that is, if any updates are available. If it still does not work, take the phone to the nearest service centre.

Laptop too hot

Q My Windows 10 laptop with Intel i3 processor, 4GB RAM and 2GB graphics card heats up and shuts down frequently. Also, the screen starts to flicker after a few minutes of work.

Arnab Mukherjee

There is something wrong with the screen itself or the graphics processor or its related circuits. The heating will get worse when the computer does heavy work. You should immediately have a qualified engineer look into the hardware of your laptop.
