q+a Can I use Microsoft Security Essentials when I have QuickHeal Internet Security, IObit Security and AdAware already installed on my PC?
A.K. Basu
You have too many virus killers and malware, spyware protectors. If you are using a genuine version of Windows, use Microsoft Security Essentials. It is a free download and is pretty good. You can do away with QuickHeal and IObit Security.
If you are using a pirated version of Windows, nothing will be of help. My suggestion is you buy a genuine copy of Windows and Zone Alarm Extreme Security. They are offering a massive discount now. The regular price of Zone Alarm is around $80. It is now available for $40. Do not keep more than one security suite on your computer. And, remember, a paid one is always better than a free version.
Defence update
q+a I bought Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 four months ago. But I cannot update it. Every time I start the process, it gets to 99 per cent and then shows that a network error has occurred. How can I overcome this problem?
Abir Dutta
This is a very common problem with Kaspersky. Open your web browser and check if you can get to Kaspersky.com and VirusList.com. If you are having trouble with your Internet connection, make sure you are plugged in correctly, or try rebooting your computer. If you have a third-party firewall or filtering software installed, either disable or remove it. Then start an update. The built-in Windows Firewall should be disabled. It is normally disabled automatically during the Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 installation process.
The third thing to try is to use a specific update server via an IP Address. Open Kaspersky. Click on Settings in the upper right. Click on My Update Center on the left. Click the second Settings button on the right. Click + to Add. Delete the source line, paste http://194.67.52.35/ and click OK. Click the arrowhead to move up so http://194.67.52.35/ is at the top of the list. Click OK twice. Click on My Update Center on the left in the main Kaspersky window. Click Start update on the right. Or try the same with these IP addresses http://195.222.17.41/, http://212.47.219.89/ and http://80.239.144.75/ http://80.239.156.195/.

Snow Leopard
q+a I have a new Compaq Presario laptop with Win XP SP2 installed on it. I want to immediately remove the virus-infected XP and install the latest version of Apple Snow Leopard. Is Snow Leopard compatible with my laptop?
Sourav Kundu
Snow Leopard is the latest version of an Operating System, called OS X, specially designed by Apple to work specifically on its own range of machines from the MacBook, MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, Mac Air, iMac and Mac Pro. It will obviously work on any other machines that Apple may decide to bring out in the future. It is incompatible with machines manufactured by anybody else.
Laptop battery
q+a How should I use my laptop for longer battery life? Should I always use it on AC power or I should discharge and recharge it every time?
Santosh Kumar
The ideal situation is to charge your laptop at home while working and avoid charging while on the move, when your machine should just run on its battery. A fully charged Dell model (just out in the market) or a Mac battery can give you up to seven hours of work. The only drawback is that these batteries are sealed. The Mac battery can last up to five years.
