q+a I use a Samsung I9500 Galaxy S4. When I bought the set, the built in operating system was Android Jelly Bean in which my email was set up with the POP3 protocol and it was working fine. Owing to an unrelated problem, the Samsung service centre while formatting the handset loaded the KitKat operating system. Since then I have been having problems with getting my mail both in POP3 and IMAP protocols. The Samsung service centre is unable to provide any solution.

There is an easy solution to this. You need to turn on the master sync for your email accounts. Slide down from the top of the screen using two fingers, not one, or you will not get the extra options. Now look for the sync option and turn it on. Make sure it is green. You will now be able to get your emails if you have configured the account correctly.

Sound option

q+a There is no audio in my Dell Inspiron 1564 laptop. Earlier, when I played online games and watched videos there was no problem with the sound. But of late even the Facebook chat notifications cannot be heard. The sound has not been muted. Please suggest a remedy.

You have a problem with the sound driver in your laptop. Go to the Dell support site at http://dell.to/1dFtXxL. Change the country to India from the bottom of the web page. Type in the service tag. The Dell service tag is a seven-character alphanumeric string that is unique to your product. There is also an Express Service Code, which is a 10-digit numeric version of the service tag. Both are usually located at the bottom of your computer on a sticker. If you cannot find it restart your computer and press the F2 key. The service tag will show up on your screen. Now on the Dell support site enter the service tag. On the next page under Drivers and downloads select the operating system and install the latest drivers. Your problem should be fixed.

App trouble

q+a I have a Nokia Lumia 710 and want to download Truecaller app in my phone. I tried to do so by going to the Nokia Store but without any success. Please let me know how to do it.

The Truecaller app is available in the Windows Phone Store, not the Nokia store. Go to the store from your phone and search for the app. Before you install it you should be aware that a lot of people have serious privacy issues with this app. It takes control of all your contacts and keeps it in the company’s database. It does this for every user who installs the app. That is how Truecaller identifies numbers unknown to you. Just last year, the Syrian Electronic Army hacked into the Truecaller database. Users need to be very careful in choosing the companies to which they entrust their private data. Your friends may not want their mobile phone number listed publicly even if they gave you the number. So you need to be careful before using this app.

Here is a tip: you can unlist your number from the Truecaller database by going to www.truecaller.com /unlist
